Tesla logo meaning: what the T stands for
What does the Tesla logo mean? The Tesla symbol is a stylized T for Tesla, and Elon Musk has compared it to a cross-section of an electric motor. So the Tesla emblem points to the part that drives the cars, not only to the company’s initial.
In a tweet on January 19, 2017, Musk wrote that the Tesla T was “like a cross section of an electric motor,” while the SpaceX X was “like a rocket trajectory.” The T had been in use since at least 2006, so the Tesla logo meaning was explained more than ten years after the badge appeared.
Musk did not say which part of the motor the T shows. The usual reading, published by Electrek days after the tweet, is that the body of the T is one pole of the rotor and the arc above it is a piece of the stator. Picture a round motor cut in half: the rotor’s poles point outward like spokes, and the stator ring wraps around them with a thin gap in between. One spoke plus the ring segment above it looks like the T.
Wikipedia also notes that the copper-rotor AC induction motor inspired the logo. Tesla’s early cars used that type of motor, from the first Roadster to the rear motors of the Model S and Model X.
| Part of the logo | Motor part (usual reading) | What that part does in a real motor |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical body of the T | A rotor pole | Spins with the rotor and delivers the turning force |
| Curved arc above the T | A section of the stator | Stays fixed; its windings carry current and create a rotating magnetic field |
| Gap between the two | The air gap | Lets the rotor turn freely without touching the stator |
Cat nose, shield and other theories
Musk’s tweet is the only explanation of the Tesla symbol meaning from inside the company that we could trace. Some people see a cat’s nose in the T, and several logo sites say Musk confirmed it, but none cites a quote or a tweet. The idea that the first shield stood for safety also started on logo sites, not with Tesla or RO Studio; a shield is simply the traditional shape for a car badge. On social media the T is also joked about as looking like an IUD, which has nothing to do with its design.
Who designed the Tesla logo?
The logo of Tesla was designed by RO Studio, a small US studio that also created the SpaceX logo. RO Studio’s archived portfolio opens its list of brand identities with “Tesla Motors,” illustrated by the original shield badge.
That thumbnail shows the complete early lockup, so RO Studio designed the shield together with the T and the TESLA lettering inside it. Some sources place the studio in New Jersey, which we could not confirm. The design date is also uncertain: logo aggregators say 2004, but the earliest archived copy of the Tesla emblem is from teslamotors.com in April 2006.
Musk has said the same studio introduced him to Franz von Holzhausen, then the director of design at Mazda, who went on to become Tesla’s chief designer. Von Holzhausen shaped the cars; the badge on them came from RO Studio.
Tesla logo history: how the badge changed
The Tesla symbol has appeared in three different setups since 2006, but the T has kept the same basic shape, with only small changes in proportion. It started in a chrome shield, moved into a red block, and today the T and the TESLA wordmark stand alone.
None of these changes happened in 2017. That February, Tesla Motors, Inc. became Tesla, Inc., and the logo stayed as it was. The shield was dropped, and red adopted, in July 2010. Here are the Tesla logos over the years:
| Version | In use | What changed | Where you saw it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla Motors shield | By April 2006 to June 2010; Roadster badge 2008 to January 2012 | First logo: chrome shield, TESLA across the top, dark T below | teslamotors.com, Roadster nose |
| Red T badge | July 2010 to early 2015 | Shield and “Motors” dropped; white T over TESLA in a red block | Website header |
| TESLA wordmark | Early 2015 to present | Red block and T dropped from the header | Website header |
| Standalone T | 2010s to present (exact start not documented) | The T alone, with no frame and no lettering | Car noses, app and website icons, charging |
2006–2010: The Tesla Motors shield, the original Tesla logo

The original Tesla logo was a rounded chrome shield. TESLA was arched across the top inside it, the curved bar of the T sat just below, and a dark, pointed T filled the lower half. On teslamotors.com it stood next to the words TESLA MOTORS in a plain, wide sans-serif, on white in 2006 and on a dark blue-gray banner from 2009 to June 2010.
The first logo Tesla put on a car was this shield. The Roadster wore it on its nose from the start of production in 2008 until the last car was built in January 2012. There was no red in it: the shield was silver and chrome, and the T was black.
2010–2015: The red T badge

Tesla dropped the shield from its website within days of its IPO on June 29, 2010. Archived copies place the switch between June 19 and July 2. The new logo was a vertical red rectangle with a white T at the top and a white, widely spaced TESLA near the bottom. “Motors” was gone. The archive shows when this happened, not why, although the timing matches the IPO. The red block stayed in the header until at least January 2015.
2015–present: The TESLA wordmark on its own

By April 1, 2015, the website header had lost both the red block and the T. It showed only the TESLA wordmark, in white on a dark background. The lettering itself was not new. The site later moved from teslamotors.com to tesla.com, and the wordmark alone is still the header logo.
2010s–present: The standalone T, today’s Tesla symbol

Today’s Tesla symbol is the T by itself, with no shield, block or lettering. It became the main Tesla car logo in the 2010s, after the Model S arrived in 2012, though the sources we checked don’t record an exact date. Compared with the squat T in the 2006 shield, it has a longer stem and a wider arc.
Is there a new Tesla logo?
No. The standalone T and the TESLA wordmark are still Tesla’s current logos, and the last documented change came in early 2015. If you see an unfamiliar badge online described as a new Tesla logo, compare it with the official files in Tesla’s media gallery.
The TESLA wordmark and font
The Tesla wordmark is not set in a store-bought font. It is custom lettering, and the same letterforms were already inside the 2006 shield, so the TESLA name has looked almost the same for two decades. Three details make it easy to recognize:
- E: three stacked horizontal bars with no vertical stroke, which is why the name is sometimes typed as T≡SLA.
- A: an arch with no crossbar.
- S and L: squared ends, with wide spacing between all five capitals.
Some logo blogs claim the missing strokes stand for magnetic fields. No source backs that up.
Tesla logo colors: red, black or white?
The Tesla logo has no single fixed color. The official files come in red, black and white, and the Tesla car symbol on the nose is chrome. Red is part of today’s brand files, but the original shield had none. Red arrived with the website change of July 2010.
- Chrome and silver: the 2006 shield badge and the T on today’s cars.
- Red with white: the 2010–2015 website block and the red versions of the T and wordmark.
- Black and white: the website header and one-color print.
Claims that Tesla switched to red in 2017 are wrong, since the red block was in the header seven years earlier. We found no Tesla statement on what the colors mean, so “red for passion” is interpretation. See more red car logos.
Where the Tesla logo appears on the car
On most Teslas, the Tesla car symbol is a chrome T on the nose, with TESLA lettering at the rear. That T is the Tesla logo car owners see most often. The first Tesla badge was different: the Roadster wore the RO Studio shield until production ended in 2012, long after the website had dropped it.
- Roadster (2008 to 2012): the chrome shield on the nose. By most accounts the car used a chassis derived from the Lotus Elise.
- Model S (from 2012) and later models: the Tesla logo on car noses is a standalone chrome T, and TESLA lettering generally sits on the tailgate. Rear badging varies by model and year.
- Beyond the car: the same T serves as the app and website icon and appears at charging stations, so it is also the Tesla symbol car owners see on their phones.
Tesla logo PNG, transparent and black-and-white versions
The download button at the top of this page gives you a Tesla logo PNG: the red T stacked above the red TESLA wordmark, with the area around the Tesla logo transparent instead of white. Tesla’s official set has three forms, each in red, black and white:
- Logomark: the Tesla symbol on its own, best for icons and small sizes.
- Wordmark: TESLA in the custom lettering, for wide layouts.
- Combined: the T above the wordmark, the version the button downloads.
Use a black-and-white Tesla logo when color isn’t available: black on light backgrounds, white on dark ones. For the complete official set, go to the Branding section of Tesla’s media gallery.
Why is it called Tesla?
Tesla is named after Nikola Tesla, the inventor and electrical engineer who developed the AC induction motor in the 1880s. Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning chose the name as a tribute to him when they incorporated Tesla Motors in 2003.
So the origin of the Tesla name and the Tesla logo meaning point to the same thing: the name honors the developer of the induction motor, and the T is meant to suggest a cross-section of an electric motor. Eberhard wanted “a car manufacturer that is also a technology company,” built around its own battery, software and motor, and a name from electrical engineering suited that plan.
One common claim needs correcting: Nikola Tesla did not discover alternating current or invent the electric motor, since both existed before his work. His contribution was the polyphase AC induction motor.
When did Tesla come out?
Tesla came out in 2003 as a company. Tesla Motors was incorporated on July 1, 2003, in San Carlos, California, and its first car, the Roadster, went into production in 2008. That means the American carmaker has been around for 23 years as of 2026.
Martin Eberhard, the first CEO, and Marc Tarpenning, the first CFO, incorporated the company, and Elon Musk came in the following year as its main investor. In May 2010 Tesla bought the former GM-Toyota NUMMI plant in Fremont, California, and it became popular with the Model S, which entered production in June 2012. The Model 3 then led global electric-car sales every year from 2018 through 2021.
| Model | Milestone | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Roadster | Production began (ended January 2012) | 2008 |
| Model S | Production began | June 2012 |
| Model X | Deliveries began | September 2015 |
| Model 3 | Announced in 2016; production began | 2017 |
| Model Y | Introduced in March 2019; deliveries began | March 2020 |
The current lineup also includes the Cybertruck and the Semi. For 2025 deliveries, BYD overtook Tesla as the world’s largest maker of battery-electric cars. Compare other electric car brands.
Frequently asked questions
Is Elon Musk related to Nikola Tesla?
No. Elon Musk has no family connection to Nikola Tesla. Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning picked the name as a tribute to the inventor when they incorporated Tesla Motors in July 2003. Musk only invested in February 2004, so he took over a name that was already chosen rather than naming the company himself.
Was Tesla founded by Elon Musk?
Not originally. Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning incorporated Tesla Motors in 2003, and Musk joined in 2004 as the lead investor. Eberhard sued Musk in June 2009, and the dispute ended in a settlement in September 2009. Under it, five people may call themselves co-founders, namely Eberhard, Tarpenning, Ian Wright, J. B. Straubel and Musk.
When did Elon Musk take over Tesla?
Musk put $6.5 million into Tesla's $7.5 million Series A round in February 2004 and became chairman and largest shareholder. In August 2007 the board he led asked Eberhard to step down as CEO. After interim CEO Michael Marks and then Ze'ev Drori, Musk became CEO in October 2008 and holds about 20% of the company.
What is Tesla's stock symbol?
Tesla's stock symbol is TSLA, and the shares trade on the Nasdaq. The company went public on June 29, 2010, at $17 per share. That made it the first American carmaker to hold an initial public offering since Ford in 1956.
Is Tesla an American or Chinese company?
Tesla is an American company. It was incorporated in San Carlos, California, in 2003. Its headquarters moved to Gigafactory Texas in Austin in December 2021, and in June 2024 the company reincorporated from Delaware to Texas.
What was Tesla originally called?
Tesla was originally called Tesla Motors, Inc. It changed its name to Tesla, Inc. in February 2017, three months after it bought SolarCity in an all-stock deal worth about $2.6 billion. SolarCity added solar products to the car business, which made the company wider than the old name suggested.
Can I use the Tesla logo?
The T and the TESLA wordmark belong to Tesla, Inc. For editorial use, download the official files from the Branding section of Tesla's media gallery and follow the terms shown on that page. Commercial use, such as printing the logo on products you sell, generally needs the owner's permission. This is general information, not legal advice.
