MAN Brand History
The company traces its roots to 1758 in Germany, later becoming known as Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg. In the 1920s the brand name MAN came into use as an abbreviation of that full name.
MAN has maintained a reputation for stability and engineering excellence throughout its long history. The brand personality is described as masculine, powerful, confident, experienced and progressive.
In 2011 Volkswagen AG acquired a controlling stake in MAN SE. The takeover was completed in November 2011, making MAN part of the Volkswagen Group. The company continues to operate as MAN Truck & Bus.
Man Logo Evolution
1920s – Present: Lion Symbol

The lion symbol used in the MAN logo was inspired by the Braunschweig lion, a famous monument in Braunschweig, Germany. This element has served as a core part of the brand identity for decades.
- Design: Lion figure representing regional heritage
- Colors: Silver-gray palette
- Changes: Lion symbol remained a consistent emblem through various eras
- Context: Represents strength, confidence and the brand’s German roots
Post-2011: Minimalist Wordmark with Arch

The current logo features a bold, capitalized MAN wordmark with a simple arch positioned above it. This design is extremely minimalistic yet masculine and strong.
- Design: Simple arch over the wordmark
- Colors: Silver-gray palette with different gray tones, lighter gray used for the letter A in print versions
- Changes: Shift toward extreme minimalism after the Volkswagen Group acquisition
- Context: Applied as a massive silver metallic emblem on trucks to balance vehicle proportions
The current logo reflects core design values of simplicity, masculinity, strength, stability and timelessness. It communicates a powerful and influential brand that is confident in today and tomorrow while representing the highest quality of heavy automobiles.
MAN remains one of the most minimalistic examples among truck brand logos while staying highly recognizable. The emblem continues to embody the brand’s long engineering heritage that began in 1758 and evolved through the adoption of the MAN name in the 1920s.
