The Barkas logo is a black wordmark: the name BARKAS in heavy capitals, set beside a mark of four black diamonds with the letters IFA. Barkas was an East German maker of small delivery vans and minibuses, built in Chemnitz and part of the state vehicle association Industrieverband Fahrzeugbau.

The Barkas emblem is drawn in a single colour, black on white. The diamonds form one larger diamond with a small white IFA tile at its centre, and the name BARKAS follows in wide, bold capitals. The same lettering appears as a raised BARKAS script with “B 1000” under it on the body of the vans.

The Barkas badge on the front of the B 1000 is a different mark: a long, flat silver-grey emblem with a yellow centre, mounted in the middle of the chrome grille. This Barkas symbol is the one drivers saw head-on, while the wordmark marks the sides of the van. The page offers the Barkas logo PNG with a transparent background, and the black and white artwork works on both light and dark pages.

Barkas Logo History

The Barkas logo appears in two forms on the B 1000 van, which was built from 1961 to 1991. Both belong to the same period and were used side by side. The same Barkas truck logo and grille badge went on the flatbed, box van and ambulance versions.

On the grille, the Barkas logo is a flat horizontal emblem with a yellow centre.

The black wordmark with the IFA diamonds names both the van and the association it belonged to.

Barkas History

Barkas, officially VEB Barkas-Werke, made small delivery vans and minibuses in East Germany. The vans were built in a new factory in Chemnitz, then called Karl-Marx-Stadt, on the site of the former Framo car plant. The old Framo factory had been shipped to the Soviet Union in the late 1940s as war reparations, and the business was later nationalized by the East German government. Barkas also made engines for Trabant cars.

B 1000 production started in 1961 and ran until 1991. The van was powered at first by a 45 PS three-cylinder two-stroke engine of DKW origin, also used in Wartburg cars. Shortly before production ended it became the B 1000-1 with a 1.3-litre four-stroke engine built under licence from Volkswagen. The B 1000 was the only commercially available van in East Germany, and it came as a flatbed, panel van, box van, people carrier with up to eight seats, and ambulance. In total 175,740 B 1000s and 1,961 B 1000-1s were built.
