AM General Logo: Meaning and History

The AM General logo is a wide olive green wordmark that spells AM GENERAL in heavy capital letters. AM General is an American heavy vehicle and contract automotive manufacturer based in South Bend, Indiana, best known for the Humvee and the Hummer.

AM General Logo

As an AM General symbol, the name stands alone, with no pictorial badge. The name AM GENERAL is set in a wide, bold typeface in a single olive green colour on a white background. The AM General emblem is the lettering itself, which works as the AM General badge, and as an AM General car logo it is separate from the HUMMER lettering used on the civilian trucks. This page offers the AM General logo PNG with a transparent background.

AM General Logo History

On this page the AM General logo history centres on the green wordmark, the logo the company uses today.

AM General History

The company dates from 1971 and was founded by American Motors Corporation. It is owned by MacAndrews & Forbes. From 1974 through 1979 it also manufactured transit buses, making more than 5,400 of them, and it has been a provider of vehicles for the CUCV program of the United States Armed Forces.

In 1984 AM General built a factory for HMMWV production at 13200 McKinley Hwy in Mishawaka, Indiana. In 1992 it began marketing the HMMWV to the civilian market under the Hummer brand. In 1999 General Motors acquired the rights to the Hummer brand, and the original civilian Hummer continued as the H1 until June 2006. The Hummer H2 went on the market in 2002 and was produced until January 2009. GM designed and marketed it, and AM General manufactured it at the Mishawaka plant, but AM General did not build the H3.

In 2003 DaimlerChrysler, the owner of the Jeep brand, sued GM over the resemblance of the Hummer’s seven-slot grille to Jeep’s. The lawsuit was dismissed after both sides acknowledged the shared corporate history of AMC and Jeep. The military Humvee is still assembled in Mishawaka, and Humvee is the model listed for the company.
