In January 2021 Lei Jun, the founder and chairman of Xiaomi, learned that the United States had sanctioned his company. During an emergency board meeting the question came up of what would happen to Xiaomi’s 30,000 or 40,000 employees if the phone business could not continue. That led to a plan to diversify into car manufacturing. Friends such as Nio CEO William Li and XPeng CEO He Xiaopeng recommended that he enter the industry.

On March 30, 2021, Xiaomi announced a wholly owned subsidiary for intelligent electric vehicles, with an initial investment of 10 billion yuan and an expected 10 billion US dollars over ten years. Xiaomi Automobile Co., Ltd. was officially established on September 1, 2021, with Lei Jun as CEO of the EV business. The company recruited designers and executives and received about 380,000 job applications. It signed an agreement with the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone for a factory with a planned annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles.

Xiaomi unveiled its first electric car, the SU7, on 28 December 2023, and launched it on 28 March 2024 in Beijing. In July 2024 Xiaomi Auto gained its own car-making qualification from the Chinese government, after using BAIC Group’s credentials. A second model, the YU7 SUV, was revealed in May 2025.
