The Voisin logo is a winged radiator badge in blue enamel, with the words AVIONS VOISIN written along the wings. Voisin, sold as Avions Voisin, was a French luxury car brand founded by the aircraft pioneer Gabriel Voisin in 1919, and it traded until 1939.

The Voisin emblem is a pair of wings that spread out to either side of a small central figure. The wings are filled with deep blue enamel and edged in polished metal, and the name AVIONS VOISIN runs across them in capital letters. The Voisin badge was fitted to the top of the brass radiator, where its pointed shape follows the line of the radiator shell. The word Avions is French for aeroplanes, and together with the wings it points to the company’s roots in aviation. This Voisin symbol is shown here as it appears on the car, in a photograph of a 1924 Avions Voisin C4.

Voisin History

Gabriel Voisin was an aviation pioneer and manufacturer who started producing cars in 1919 at Issy-les-Moulineaux, an industrial suburb southwest of Paris. His cars used Knight-type sleeve valve engines, and his designs made wide use of light alloys, above all aluminium. One of the early designs was the Voisin Laboratoire Grand Prix car of 1923. It was one of the first cars to use monocoque chassis construction, with a small propeller on the radiator to drive the cooling pump.

Voisin developed the make’s style of rational coachwork with his collaborator André Noel, who favoured lightness, central weight distribution, large luggage boxes and angular lines. The 1930s models with underslung chassis were very low. In the early 1930s Voisin could no longer pay all of his draughtsmen. The young engineer André Lefèbvre left, recommended by Voisin to Louis Renault, and finally joined Citroën, where he led the Traction Avant, the 2CV and the DS. The brand traded until 1939.
