In 2023 BYD Auto launched two new brands. Yangwang, a line of advanced vehicles, came in January, and Fangchengbao was announced on June 9. The first model, the Bao 5, appeared on August 16, 2023 at the Chengdu Auto Show. It is built on a body-on-frame platform called DMO (Dual Mode Off-road). Production began in September and the car went on sale in China in November, with 10,000 orders reported within three days of the launch.
At the Beijing Auto Show in April 2024 the brand announced the flagship Bao 8, the compact Super 3 and a Super 9 sports car prototype. General manager Xiong Tianbo reported 20,000 cars sold in China in the first six months. The Bao 3, a battery electric SUV and the most affordable model, followed in June 2024.
Fangchengbao started with its own directly operated stores, unlike BYD, which relies on dealers, and began recruiting dealerships in June 2024. In July 2024 it cut the price of the Bao 5 by 50,000 yuan to compete with Great Wall Motor’s Tank series, which upset early buyers.
